  • description: As much as we rely on adhesive tape to hold stuff together, strings and ropes still come in handy from time to time. We use the bow knot to lash our shoes to our feet and the square knot to tie-up packages (and just about everything else). Travis and I have become enamored of the whipping knot or “whiplash” because of its applications in woodworking. It can be as strong as nails or screws; and because it compresses the wood, it can keep the wood from splitting under extreme stress. The lash is completely reversible – you can tie and untie the knot without marring the wood surface. And in some circumstances, it can be decorative as well as practical. I show how to make a whiplash while building a museum exhibit on the Wright brothers, a replica of one of their aeronautical experiments.
